Tornado Turnings
Tornado Turnings are wood turnings that are made from trees that were destroyed by the EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. Through the generosity of many different people and organizations, we have been able to collect a variety of wood from trees that were destroyed that day. We have oak, walnut, maple, sycamore, sweet gum, and tulip popular. The vast majority of the wood that we have is oak which was obtained from Joplin High School, Emerson Elementary School, Eastmorland Elementary School, Duquesne Elementary School, and Kelsey Norman Elementary School. We also have sweet gum which is from Irving Elementary School.
This is a great opportunity for our customers to own a one of a kind remembrance of Joplin, either through a handcrafted custom made pen or a handcrafted custom made bowl or hollow form (vase) that came from one of the trees that were destroyed on that day. Each piece will be distinctively different because of the grain pattern of the wood. At The Wooden Doerr, we work hard to ensure that each piece will be beautiful and unique.
You may contact The Wooden Doerr at 417.529.3730 for additional help and information. In addition, Local Color Art Gallery of Joplin also has a collection of Tornado Turnings to view and purchase.
